Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was re-electedHARARE: Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe was re-elected Saturday as leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union / National Front for the next five years, calling on his supporters to work for the survival of the party.

“We must begin to work for the party, never about personal egos. We must begin to organize our people for the party,” Mugabe told supporters at the final day of the party conference.

“We come back stronger and better focused on the party, and education are willing to take the enemy who seeks to destroy us,” he said. Mugabe’s election puts him in a position to run for the next presidential election is tentatively scheduled for 2013. It would be 89 years.

The Zimbabwe African National Union in Zimbabwe / Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980, when it took over as editors tolerant of Rhodesia, ruled by whites.

But the party had not torn internal conflicts about who should succeed in the end the veteran leader.

Mugabe on Friday expressed regret at how the divisions were threatening the party, saying it “is eating itself.”
