With the inauguration of the charging station, Chile joins the ranks of other nations such as Japan, which has 600 charging stations, as well as Belgium, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, the U.S., Sweden and Spain, which have a total of 41 stations divided among them.
"The day we can use this technology in massive quantities, we're going to leap forward in protecting the environment, reducing pollution in our cities and improving people's quality of life," President Sebastian Pinera said at the inaugural ceremony.
Electric cars began selling in Chile earlier this year. The new charging station will allow electric cars to recharge to 80% of capacity in half an hour, giving them a range of 80 miles.
