ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly was informed on Thursday that the government was taking measures to save up to 1,100MW of electricity this summer.
Water and Power Minister Syed Naveed Qamar said the conservation plan would help save between 1,000MW and 1,100MW of electricity and reduce the duration of loadshedding.
He said the measures would include reduction of use of lights by up to 50 per cent in the Presidency, Prime Minister’s Secretariat and the PM House, residences and offices of federal ministers, governors, chief ministers and provincial ministers and government departments.
The conventional bulbs will be replaced with tube lights and energy-savers. The use of air-conditioners will be allowed after 11am and AC thermostats will be kept at 26 degrees Celsius.
Mr Qamar said that local governments would be asked to use alternate street lights and power supply to billboards and neon signs would be curtailed.
Commercial decorative lights will be banned during summer months and weekly holiday for industry will be staggered. The local authorities will enforce closure of markets and shops at 8pm.
The ministry has launched a pilot project with the Multan Electric Power Company to replace inefficient irrigation motors and pumps with efficient equipment.
